Nanci Ricks to Present Convocation at Mount Union College

May 10, 2010

Nanci Ricks, the executive director of the Dalit Freedom Network (DFN), will present a convocation at Mount Union College on Thursday, November 9 at 10:35 a.m. in Presser Recital Hall.

The DFN is a non-profit organization that partners with the Dalites, those who are considered beneath the four main castes of India. They literally have no caste. They are the untouchables, the Dalits, which means oppressed, downtrodden and exploited social group.

DFN's goals are to raise the level of awareness among Americans about the plight of the Dalits and to discover funding for organizations in India. Their main focus is on education, medicine, economic development and human rights advocacy.

Ricks graduated from Indiana University with a bachelor of science degree in physical therapy. She has published many research articles in the field of pediatrics and co-authored a chapter in a book on rehabilitation of burn survivors. Her current work in physical therapy comes from her annual trips to India and the Children's Hospital Burn Camps.

Ricks has been involved with numerous volunteer activities throughout the years. She has dedicated her life to bringing holistic transformation in India and is also trying to enhance the community in any way possible. Ricks is also running a support group for home schooling families, providing meals for lunch programs for international students, counseling in the Stephens Ministry and heading the Children's Hospital Burn Camp for burn survivors.

She is married and is the mother of four children. They reside in Denver, CO.

Ricks will speak again at an evening praise and worship service in Presser Recital Hall at 8 p.m. Rev. Marty Cashburless, chaplain of the College, will preside at the evening service. Music for the evening program will be provided by Dr. Martin Horning, professor of economics, accounting and business administration and his son Matthew Horning, accompanied by Janelle Phinney, lecturer of music.
