According to the Bureau for Labor Statistics, employment in the field of nursing is projected to increase 26% with 711,900 more nursing jobs needed by 2020. Nursing is one of the fastest-growing occupations in the U.S. Nurses make up the majority of the healthcare industry.
The faculty at th University of Mount Union will provide you with ample opportunities for hands-on experience to prepare you professionally and personally to meet the demands of our challenging and exciting healthcare profession. Graduates will be prepared to practice as licensed registered nurses in a variety of healthcare agencies and areas of specialties.
Wide Range of Employers
After graduation, nurses often have many choices of where to work, areas to specialize in or degrees to pursue. The range of nursing specialties is wide and varies. Depending on the specialty you choose, you will work during different times of the day in 4, 8, 10 or 12-hour shifts during the weekdays, weekends or a combination of both.
Most registered nurses find careers at:
- General medical and surgical hospitals;
- Offices of physicians;
- Home healthcare services; and
- Nursing care facilities
Other career options can be sought at government agencies, administrative and support services, within the pharmaceutical industry and through educational and research services. Registered nurses work in patients' homes, schools, community centers, correctional facilities, summer camps, urban hospitals, suburban doctors’ offices, on Indian reservations or Alaskan outposts and with the military. Some move frequently, traveling in the U.S. and throughout the world to help care for patients in places where there are not enough healthcare workers.
