Office of Career Development Offers Job Search Advice to Recent Graduates

The Office of Career Development at Mount Union College is committed to educating and empowering students in the career and job search process while they are in college and after they graduate.

Rebecca Doak, director of career services, strongly believes that recent graduates have options, even during these tough economic times. Options include, but are not limited to, baccalaureate internships, graduate school, a focused job search and seeking help from a recruiter.

“Some companies even offer post baccalaureate internships. They might be unpaid, but it will give recent grads the opportunity to prove themselves as professionals and dedicated workers,” said Doak. “Therefore when the market picks up, they’ve already established a good reputation and that company will have them in mind if a position becomes available.”

When asked about whether or not students should pursue graduate school, Doak explained, “if they’re going into a field where graduate school will eventually be required, now is a good time to go.”

Her best advice to recent graduates would be to search for job openings on professional websites and look directly for job positions on an employer’s website. “Go where the jobs are,” Doak advised. “Mount Union’s rigorous education prepares students for lifelong success.”

Recent graduates who plan on staying in Northeast Ohio should look at applying to companies that are featured in Weatherhead 100. The Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University developed a ranking system that acknowledges Northeast Ohio’s fastest growing companies. NorthCoast 99, an annual recognition program that honors 99 great workplaces for top talent in Northeast Ohio, is also a great place to find employers.

There are also staffing agencies out there that alumni can utilize. “Don’t be afraid to use a recruiter,” said Doak. “They are reputable and there is no charge to you.”

Doak also highly recommends that recent graduates and anyone in the workplace “be creative” and “think outside of the box.” “Go out there and prove yourself –
employers will notice.”
