Ohio Supreme Court Justices to Visit Mount Union

June 11, 2012

ALLIANCE, Ohio — The University of Mount Union will host several special guests from the Ohio Supreme Court as part of the 66th annual Buckeye Girls State (BGS) program held on its campus this week.

The four women justices of the Ohio Supreme Court will spend time with BGS delegates during the week-long event on campus. Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor and justices Evelyn Lyndberg Stratton, Judith Ann Lanzinger and Yvette McGee Brown will speak with selected delegates. Following their talk, some of the justices will have lunch with delegates on campus.

The justices’ presentation will be recorded and broadcast on the Ohio Channel at noon and 8 p.m. on June 15 and at 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on June 24.

“For generations, Buckeye Girls State has helped turn today's girls into tomorrow's leaders,” Chief Justice O’Connor said. “It is a special treat for the four women justices of the Ohio Supreme Court to spend some time with the young women at this year's Buckeye Girls State. Hopefully, they will walk away knowing a little more about the Ohio judicial branch and with the inspiration to go on and do big things.”

Kelly McLaughlin, deputy director of the judicial branch of government at BGS, said the organization was contacted by the Ohio Supreme Court and was told that all four female justices were interested in participating in this year’s BGS event.

“We were thrilled that they were interested in participating and we hope it will continue in the years to come,” McLaughlin said. “For most of the girls, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to have contact with such high-ranking government officials.”

Buckeye Girls State, in its 66th year, is a program for girls between their junior and senior year of high school. Girls are selected to participate in the program and are sponsored by their local American Legion Auxiliary unit, which pays the cost of their attendance. During the weeklong event, participants are assigned to a city (residence hall) on campus and one of two mythical political parties. The event includes a caucus, campaigning and primary and general elections. During the later part of the week, delegates function in appointed and elected jobs.
