Orchid Ensemble to Perform at Mount Union March 31
March 26, 2010The JUNO-nominated Orchid Ensemble will perform at Mount Union College on Wednesday, March 31 at 8 p.m. in Presser Recital Hall.
Established in 1997, the ensemble includes Lan Tung on the erhu/Chinese violin, Haiqiong Deng on the zheng/Chinese zither and Jonathan Bernard on percussion.
Orchid blends ancient musical instruments and traditions from China and beyond, creating a beautiful new sound that embraces a variety of musical styles ranging from the traditional and contemporary music of China, world music, new music to jazz and creative improvisation. Acclaimed as “One of the brightest blossoms on the world music scene” by Vancouver’s The Georgia Straight, the ensemble has been developing an innovative musical genre based on the cultural exchange between Western and Asian musicians.
The ensemble’s annual productions have evolved to integrate music with multimedia, dance and scenographic installation. Its CD Road to Kashgar won a 2005 JUNO nomination and has been featured regularly on CBC TV, Radio and Radio Canada.
This event is free and open to the public. Presser Recital Hall is located within Cope Music Hall, which stands on the corner of Union Avenue and Simpson Street, across from the Campus Lakes. For more information, contact the Department of Music at (330) 823-2180.
