What Should I Bring to College?


  • Bed linens - twin size (extra long sheets are recommended)
  • Towels and washcloths
  • Alarm clock
  • Bucket or some sort of carrier to hold your bathroom items
  • Sandals or slippers (to walk to the bathroom and for showers)
  • Personal items (soap, mirror, toiletries, etc.)
  • Laundry detergent/dryer sheets and laundry basket or bag iron (ironing boards are available in some residence halls)
  • Hangers for clothes
  • Basic kitchen needs (silverware, manual can opener, plate, bowl, cup, microwaveable dish, dish towel, dish soap)
  • Basic cleaning needs (cleaner, paper towels, etc.)
  • Kleenex
  • Desk lamp/study lamp
  • School supplies (paper, pens, scissors, tape, stapler, notebooks, etc.)
  • First aid items (bandages, aspirin, and any necessary medications)
  • Umbrella and rain gear
  • Strong keychain (Bookstore has key chains with ID holders which are ideal)
  • Flashlight
  • Power strip/surge protector

Optional Items

  • Refrigerator (no larger than 4.0 cubic ft.)
  • Stereo/radio
  • Television/DVD player
  • Small microwave
  • Computer
  • Fan
  • Camera
  • Bicycle and bicycle lock
  • Carpeting or rugs for your floor
  • Hot pots or coffee makers (NOT hot plates)
  • Storage containers
  • Sports equipment and various games (board games, cards, etc.)
  • Dry erase board for room door
  • Small sewing kit
  • Posters/pictures
  • Room decorating items (plants, etc.)

What should I not bring to college?

Due to fire safety and other concerns, the following items are prohibited from residence hall rooms*:

  • Air conditioners
  • Bread machines
  • Candles (decorative or otherwise)
  • Deep fryers
  • Electric grills
  • Electric frying pans
  • Firearms, or other weapons
  • Firecrackers
  • Any flammable decorations made of cotton batting, straw, vines, leaves, shrubbery or foam plastic
  • Halogen lamps
  • Hot dog cookers
  • Hot plates
  • Incense
  • Live Christmas trees
  • Oil-based popcorn poppers
  • Oil burners
  • Pets (other than fish)
  • Pine roping or garland
  • Potpourri cookers
  • Refrigerators larger than 4.2 cubic ft.
  • Rice cookers
  • Slow cookers/Crock-Pots
  • Space heaters
  • Sun lamps
  • Toaster ovens/toasters
  • Waterbeds
  • Woks (electric)

*This list is not exhaustive; students may not have any cooking devices other than microwaves.
