MY EXCEPTIONAL STORY
Mount Union Community
I chose to attend Mount Union after coming here for the Presidential Scholarship competition. After the competition, they hosted a quick, informal tour of campus. I automatically fell in love with the campus itself as well as the community atmosphere that the people on campus created. My favorite part of Mount Union is most definitely the people. As cliché as it may sound, the Mount Union community genuinely feels like family to me. Everywhere you go, you see friends, classmates, staff and faculty that are extremely friendly, supportive and caring. You truly have a second family here at Mount Union, and no matter who you are, you find your individual place on campus in no time. Everybody here has something to offer, and we all are able to come together to better ourselves as well as each other.
Advice to Prospective Students
My advice to prospective students would be to not worry so much. As someone who worries about everything, college is a time to explore and enjoy life. It doesn’t matter if you don’t come in knowing what major you want and what your career aspirations are. Just give yourself time and everything will fall into place.
Deciding on a Major
I chose French as my major because I enjoyed learning it in high school, and I figured that majoring in a foreign language would make me more marketable in the job market. I finally decided on public relations after having it recommended to be by a faculty member in the Department of Communications. I came to Mount Union intending to be a mathematics major, believe it or not! However, I learned that math wasn’t the field for me, and my interests and personality fit in much better in the communications field.
Opportunities to Study Abroad
I had the opportunity to attend a travel seminar with Dr. Bertrand Landry the spring semester of my freshman year as well as formally studying abroad the summer of 2016. My most favorite experience was studying abroad, hands down. I studied in Lyon, France, and I was able to hone my French skills and meet so many new and amazing people.
New Academic Interests
My high school was extremely small and we didn’t have a lot of elective courses to take. Here at Mount, I developed quite an interest in psychology. I liked it so much that I chose to minor in it! Psychology will be extremely beneficial in the public relations field, seeing as how psychographics are such an important part of being able to effectively analyze your target publics.
My favorite professor is Dr. Bertrand Landry. His teaching style is wonderful because he uses a lot of visual aids and entertaining examples of the work we do. He always has new, fresh ideas, and he focuses more on application of learned material through projects instead of memorization of facts through exams. He has a magnetic personality and he’s extremely personable and caring with all of his students.
A Well-Rounded Education
A liberal arts education makes students extremely well-rounded, allowing them to apply techniques and knowledge that they’ve learned from their core classes to classes within their majors and minors. This allows students at Mount Union to think differently and critically about what they are learning, which creates an extremely unique learning environment.
Ultimate Career Goals
Currently, I don’t have one specific career goal. However, I do hope to take my French and public relations experience and combine it in order to get a career in the fashion world. Both of these majors allow me to incorporate some fashion knowledge into my work. Mount is allowing me to explore my interests through an educational lens, and by doing that, I’ll be prepared to possibly continue my education after Mount Union in the fashion field.
My favorite part of Mount Union is most definitely the people. As cliché as it may sound, the Mount Union community genuinely feels like family to me.
