Physician Assistant Studies Program Receives Award

– The University of Mount Union’s Physician Assistant Studies Program Student Society received the Outstanding Novice Student Society Award from the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) Student Academy during its annual, national conference in June.
According to the AAPA’s website (, the Outstanding Student Society Award recognizes three student societies for outstanding service to the profession in the areas of public education, public service, promotion of diversity and professional development. Mount Union’s students within the Physician Assistant Studies Program submitted a scrapbook for competition that cataloged and detailed their community service projects during the 2009-2010 Academic Year. Some of their community service projects throughout the year included:
  • Sponsoring a Strong Strides for Kids 5K Walk/Run
  • Participating in Relay for Life
  • Collecting items during the holiday season for a domestic violence shelter
  • Volunteering at a hunger center
  • Organizing a coat drive
  • Holding a special donation drive that raised more than $600 to help a single family during the holiday season
The Student Board of Directors of the AAPA evaluated each student society entry at its spring meeting. Each scrapbook had to provide information documenting their work in community and public service, public education, diversity, professional advocacy, fund raising, class unity, work with constituent organizations, student leadership, mentorship and partnering with other physician assistant studies programs and communication. Mount Union was one of the three societies to receive recognition for their outstanding service to the profession. Mount Union’s program received the novice level as it is a student society that has been registered within the past three years.
The Physician Assistant Studies Program at Mount Union is the University’s first master’s level program in nearly a century. The program, which began in May of 2009, offers a curriculum rich in biomedical and clinical preparatory sciences and develops the medical decision-making and problem-solving skills that may be applied to patient situations encountered in clinical practice. Students within the program will earn a master of science degree after successful completion of 27 months of coursework and clinicals.
