MY EXCEPTIONAL STORY
Learning about Mount Union
Growing up right down the road, I always knew about Mount Union. However, I really became aware of Mount Union my junior year of high school. I was invited to attend Buckeye Girls State that summer, which is held on campus. I fell in love with the campus during that week. It was a perfect size, and the grounds are beautiful. I think the smaller, friendlier atmosphere sets Mount Union apart from other schools. It is a more relaxed and comfortable campus while still maintaining a wonderful academic program.
Choosing a University
I chose to attend Mount Union because of the high prestige that comes along with the name. I had only ever heard good things about Mount, and the students who had graduated from Mount were successful and in high demand. I wanted to go to a school where I knew I would be receiving a quality education and where I would be challenged in my learning and thought process. I also received the Academy Scholarship and Buckeye Girls State Award. These scholarships made it possible for me to feel comfortable coming to Mount Union while working my way through college. They made my dreams attainable.
I love the professors at Mount Union. Every professor that I have had so far has been more than willing to help me in any way possible- even if it doesn’t pertain to their class or content area. Professor Jan Webler and Professor Deb Lotsof have helped me adjust the most to college life. They are always more than willing to help me through all of my tough decisions and scheduling everything to make sure that I am right on track.
Advice for Prospective Students
Do not be afraid to pursue your dreams, whatever they may be. The professors will help you achieve your goals and give you the motivation to do your best.
Choosing a Major
I chose to study art education because I have always felt the most comfortable and the freest in the art room. I would use my art classes in school as an escape to relax from the stresses of the day and express myself through my art. It combines skill, dedication and creativity. I want to be that teacher and have that classroom for students to go and be free to be themselves. I want to have my art classroom be an outlet for students.
I have had the opportunity to go into multiple schools to tutor, shadow, teach and help host a Family Night. Teaching and shadowing at West Branch Preschool was probably my favorite experience. Preschoolers are not afraid to use their minds and be creative. They are so full of imagination that kids hide and lose as they grow.
Favorite Class and Professor
My favorite class so far is Art Materials and Methods I. My professor is absolutely phenomenal. Mrs. Crookshank shows us not only ideas for projects and ways to teach, but also how to teach different types of students. She teaches us how to help each student be successful and proud of their work. She teaches the material that you cannot find in books, and I know it will help me tremendously as a future educator.
Ultimate Career Goal
I would love to be an art teacher. After a few years I think I would like to go back to school for a master’s degree and possibly even a doctorate to hopefully someday be an art museum or art gallery curator.
The professors will help you achieve your goals and give you the motivation to do your best.
