Raider Relief Seeks Alliance Home for Project

March 7, 2012

March MakeoverMembers of Raider Relief, a philanthropic University of Mount Union student organization, have announced plans for a second annual March Makeover. During the weekend of March 31, student volunteers will give an Alliance home a face lift.

In March of 2011, Raider Relief completed a similar project in which nearly 300 volunteers from Mount Union offered their time and talents to help transform the Empowerment Center, located at 715 S. Arch Ave. in Alliance, which also houses the Tabernacle Baptist Church. Area businesses donated thousands of dollars in materials that allowed volunteers to complete renovation projects including painting, cleaning, building cabinets and landscaping.

“Last spring, we decided to ‘make over’ an entire community center with hopes of making a small difference in the lives of a few hundred people. But this year, we plan to make a big difference in the life of a single family,” said Kyle Dreger, a sophomore computer science major of Kent, OH and project leader of Raider Relief, when explaining how this year’s effort is different than the 2011 project.

Raider Relief is asking Alliance residents to nominate friends, co-workers, family members and neighbors as prospective recipients of this year’s makeover.

“Our only requirement is that the home be owner occupied, and that the people living there be facing one or more of life’s challenges,” said project leader Alicia Switzer, a junior communication major of Strongsville, OH.

Nominations must be received by Wednesday, March 14. Forms are available at Cuppa Joes Coffee House, located at 449 East State St. in Alliance or online at www.RaiderRelief.org. In the meantime, project leaders are also seeking material donations such as paint, cleaning supplies and other home improvement items from community-minded Alliance area businesses.
