Relay for Life Raises $19,500 for ACS

ALLIANCE, Ohio — Students at the University of Mount Union raised $19,500 for the American Cancer Society through the University’s Relay for Life event held April 13-14.

The event, held in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex on campus, included a variety of Disney-themed activities such as Disney Drawing, Cinderella: One Shoe Lap, Ms. Relay Pageant and Mulan: Chopsticks Relay.

According to Amy Glazer, income development representative with the American Cancer Society and Mount Union liaison, a student committee planned the event and encouraged student groups to raise funds leading up to the event. Fundraising begins in January when the committee holds its first meeting. Co-chairs for the event were Mount Union seniors Megan Nall, an economics major of Akron and Megan Nurnberger, an early childhood education major of Pittsburgh.

Several teams, including Mount Union’s Alpha Tau Omega (ATO) fraternity, conducted separate fundraisers prior to the event. For the last several years, ATO has held a “Cuts for Cancer” event to raise funds. This year, Today’s Headlines Salon of Strongsville donated the time of three stylists, who gave 45 haircuts during the event. ATO raised $570 through haircuts and $3,277 altogether, according to Dylan Spangenberg, ATO member and sophomore management major of Chardon.

Glazer said the 378 participating students took turns walking the track for the entire 18 hours of the event.

“I’m very impressed with the students at Mount Union — they really did a good job,” she said.

Glazer said the goal for Mount Union students is to establish a Colleges Against Cancer student-led organization which would enhance Relay for Life and increase advocacy and awareness of the event on campus.

According to relayforlife.org, Relay for Life is a life-changing event that helps communities across the globe celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost and fight back against the disease. Funds raised through the events help the American Cancer Society fund research, cures and support for those battling the disease.
