April 22, 2010
Mount Union College has named Sandra Ekstrand, assistant professor of economics, accounting and business administration, as the College's 2007 Great Teacher.
The award was presented Thursday, April 19 at Mount Union's annual Senior Recognition and Honors Convocation.
Ekstrand earned a bachelor of arts degree in management from Malone College and a master of science degree in organizational development and analysis from Case Western Reserve University.
A member of the Mount Union faculty since 2002, she is responsible for creating the human resource concentration for the business administration major.
"I have never been more impacted or more inspired by another teacher in my entire career," said one senior nominating Ekstrand for the award. "She brings her real-life experiences to the classroom and uses them to teach her students."
"For women going into the business world, she is a great role model," another student nomination said. 'She equips her students to take what they learn and apply it to succeed in the real world. She can always be counted on to go that extra mile for her students on a continual basis'
The Great Teacher Award, initiated in 1962, is sponsored by the Alumni Association and recognizes excellence in teaching - the foundation upon which the reputation of Mount Union has been built.
Ekstrand was chosen as this year's Great Teacher by a selection committee consisting of the officers of the senior class, the two past recipients of the Great Teacher Award, the president and immediate past president of the Alumni Association and the president of the National Cabinet of Mount Union Women.
