I've lived in Alliance my whole life. I knew I wanted to stay close to home when I started researching colleges, and I realized that Mount Union was the perfect fit for me. The academics are strong and there is plenty to get involved in on campus. Not to mention, the campus is amazing.

Scholarships, Loans and Grants

 

Federal Grants

Federal Pell Grant (2017-2018)
This grant is awarded to eligible students after FAFSA information is reviewed and need is determined. Award amounts are based upon Federal Pell Grant eligibility. The maximum Federal Pell Grant award for the 2017-2018 award year is $5,920

TEACH Grant
Interested students should contact the Office of Student Financial Aid. In exchange for receiving a TEACH Grant, you must agree to serve as a full-time teacher in a high-need field in a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves low-income students (see below for more information on high-need fields and schools serving low-income students). As a recipient of a TEACH Grant, you must teach for at least four academic years within eight calendar years of completing the program of study for which you received a TEACH Grant.

IMPORTANT: If you fail to complete this service obligation, all amounts of TEACH Grants that you received will be converted to a Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan. You must then repay this loan to the U.S. Department of Education. You will be charged interest from the date the grant(s) was disbursed. Note: TEACH Grant recipients will be given a 6-month grace period prior to entering repayment if a TEACH Grant is converted to a Direct Unsubsidized Loan. State Grants

Availability of funding for state programs is dependent on the states’ annual budget review



The Ohio College Oppor­tunity Grant (OCOG) is available to eligible students. Eligibility requires that both the student and parent be Ohio residents for at least three years and have an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) of less than $2,190. Funding for OCOG comes from the Ohio Board of Regents. To apply for OCOG, complete the 2018-2019 FAFSA by September 30, 2018. For more information, please visit the following website: https://www.ohiohighered.org/ocog

PHEAA State Grant
: To be considered for Pennsylvania state grant funds, parents and students must be residents of the state of Pennsylvania. Students must file the FAFSA by May 1, 2018 and must list Mount Union first in the “universities to receive information” section. 

Mount Union Scholarships, Awards and Grants

Presidential Scholarship ­– full tuition

Any high school senior who has achieved an ACT score of at least 30 or a SAT score of at least 1390 (EBRW + Math) and has earned a minimum grade point average of 3.75 is eligible to compete for the University of Mount Union’s Presidential Scholarships.

 

Investment Alliance Scholarship – full tuition

The Investment Alliance Scholarship is offered to the top 15 students of each Alliance High School graduating class, as identified by the school district, who meet normal admission criteria to the University and are granted admission. Eligibility is determined as of the sixth semester of high school study, and those eligible must continue to earn a minimum of a 3.0 GPA in the seventh semester of high school study. Recipients must demonstrate continuous traditional enrollment at Alliance High School for the full four years of study and earn an Alliance High School diploma, completing all degree requirements by the spring commencement (excludes home-schooled and transfer students; includes students with normal accelerated credits including post-secondary, dual credit and AP). The awards are renewable each year (maximum of eight consecutive semesters) as long as the student is a traditional undergraduate full-time student (minimum of 12 hours each semester) and maintains a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0*. 

 

Trustee Scholarship – $18,000

Students who have a 27 ACT and a 3.5 GPA will earn a Trustee Scholarship, and then will be considered for need-based aid as appropriate. The awards are renewable each year (maximum of eight semesters) if the student is a traditional undergraduate full-time student (minimum of 12 hours each semester) and maintains a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0*. Trustee Scholars will be invited to campus in the spring semester for academic achievement dinners to honor their accomplishments. Minority Achievement Award – up to $5,000

As an institution founded on the principles of offering education with equal opportunity, the University of Mount Union deliberately works to create an inclusive culture that values diversity. The Minority Achievement Award is available to American minority students. Students must have an incoming GPA of 2.5, and up to $5,000 will be awarded at the time of financial aid packaging. Students eligible for the Minority Achievement Award will be invited to campus in the spring semester for Minority Achievement dinners to honor their accomplishments. More details coming soon.

 

Founder’s Scholarship ­– $16,000

The Founder’s Scholarship is based on a review of students’ academic credentials such as curriculum, GPA, ACT/SAT and high school rank. Eligibility is determined at the time of admission. The awards are renewable each year (maximum of eight semesters) if the student is a traditional undergraduate full-time student (minimum of 12 hours each semester) and maintains a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0*.

 

Dean’s Scholarship – $12,000

The Dean’s Scholarship is based on a review of students’ academic credentials such as curriculum, GPA, ACT/SAT and high school rank. Eligibility is determined at the time of admission. The awards are renewable each year (maximum of eight semesters) as long as the student is a traditional undergraduate full-time student (minimum of 12 hours each semester) and maintains a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0*.

*Cumulative GPA is reviewed at the end of the fourth semester and each spring semester after that. If you lose the scholarship because of the GPA requirement and bring the cumulative GPA up to 3.0 or above after the next semester, please contact the Office of Student Financial Services for a review of your financial aid. Your scholarship may be reinstated. 

 

Hartshorn Award – $10,000

The Hartshorn Award is offered to students based on a review of the students’ academic credentials such as curriculum, GPA, ACT/SAT and high school rank. Eligibility is determined at the time of admission. The awards are renewable each year (maximum of eight semesters) as long as the student is a traditional undergraduate full-time student (minimum of 12 hours each semester).

 

Transfer Achievement Scholarship – $13,000 

The Transfer Achievement Scholarship is offered to students who, after graduating from high school, have taken more than 12 credit hours at another institution and have a cumulative composite GPA of 3.5* or above from all institutions enrolled. Eligibility is determined at the time of admission. The awards are renewable each year (maximum of eight semesters) as long as the student is a traditional undergraduate full-time student (minimum of 12 hours each semester) and maintains a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0**.

 

Transfer University Scholarship – $11,000

The Transfer University Scholarship is offered to students who, after graduating from high school, have taken more than 12 credit hours at another institution and have a cumulative composite GPA of 3.0-3.49* from all institutions enrolled. Eligibility is determined at the time of admission. The awards are renewable each year (maximum of eight semesters) as long as the student is a traditional undergraduate full-time student (minimum of 12 hours each semester) and maintains a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0**.

 

Transfer Opportunity Scholarship – $8,000

A Transfer Opportunity Scholarship is offered to students who, after graduating from high school, have taken more than 12 credit hours at another institution and have a cumulative composite GPA of 2.7-2.99* from all institutions enrolled. Eligibility is determined at the time of admission. The awards are renewable each year (maximum of eight semesters) as long as the student is a traditional undergraduate full-time student (minimum of 12 hours each semester) and maintains a cumulative GPA of at least 2.7**.  

*Transfer students who, after graduating from high school, have not taken more than 12 credit hours will be reviewed for an award based the students’ high school academic credentials such as curriculum, GPA, ACT/SAT and high school rank.

**Cumulative GPA is reviewed at the end of the fourth semester and each spring semester after that. The Music Scholarship is available to students who demonstrate exceptional talent in these areas. Interested students must audition before March 1. Upon recommendation of the Department of Music, the awards are renewable each year (maxi­mum of eight semesters) as long as the student is a traditional undergraduate full-time student (minimum of 12 hours each semester).

 

Theatre Scholarship 

The Theater Scholarship is available to students who demonstrate exceptional talent in these areas. Interested students must audition before March 1. Upon recommendation of the Department of Theatre, the awards are renewable each year (maxi­mum of eight semesters) as long as the student is a traditional undergraduate full-time student (minimum of 12 hours each semester).

 

Blended Music/Theater Scholarship 

The Blended Music/Theater Scholarship is awarded to students who demonstrate exceptional talent in these combined areas. Interested students must audition before March 1. Upon recommendation of the Department of Theatre, the awards are renewable each year (maxi­mum of eight semesters) as long as the student is a traditional undergraduate full-time student (minimum of 12 hours each semester).

 

Methodist Grant

The Methodist Grant is a need-based grant available to traditional full-time undergraduate students (minimum 12 hours each semester) who have financial need as determined by the results of the FAFSA. The grant is available for up to 10 semesters, as long as sufficient need continues. Need is re-evaluated annually.

 

Mount Union Grant 

The Mount Union Grant is a need-based grant available to traditional full-time undergraduate students (minimum 12 hours each semester) who have financial need as determined by the results of the FAFSA. The grant is available for up to 10 semesters, as long as sufficient need continues. Need is re-evaluated annually.

 

Legacy Award – up to $3,000

The Legacy Award is awarded to full-time undergraduate dependent sons or daughters of Mount Union graduates. The awards are renewable each year (maxi­mum of eight semesters) as long as the student is a full-time student (minimum of 12 hours each semester). Transfer students are eligible to receive the award less the semesters enrolled at another institution.

 

Science Fair Scholarship – $1,500

The Science Fair Scholarship is available to incoming undergraduate students who have achieved a superior level of performance at State Science Day or at the District 13 Science Fair during their junior or senior years in high school. The awards is available up to 8 semesters, as long as the student is a traditional undergraduate full-time student (minimum 12 hours each semester).  Student must submit documentation of their superior-level of performance for consideration.

 

Buckeye Girls State Scholarship – $2,000

The Buckeye Girls State Scholarship is available to incoming undergraduate students who participated in the American Legion Auxiliary’s annual Buckeye Girls State event on campus during the summer before their senior year in high school. The awards are renewable for four years (8 semesters) as long as the student is a traditional undergraduate full-time student (minimum 12 hours each semester). 

 

Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship (Transfer students) -- up to $2,500

Phi Theta Kappa is a national honor society for students attending two-year colleges. Students transferring to Mount Union who are members of this organization and who have earned a GPA of 3.25 at their previous institution will be offered this scholarship upon receipt of Phi Theta Kappa membership verification.  

 

Ohio Transfer Council Scholarship (Transfer students) -- up to $1,000

The Ohio Transfer Council reviews applications to offer three non-renewable $1,000 scholarship to students transferring to/from participating Ohio colleges and universities. Click here for the application (deadline is June 30).

 

Ministerial Award – Up to $10,000

Ministerial Awards are awarded to eligible dependents who currently live with the parent who is a full-time ordained minister or missionary. The primary source of income for the parent minister must come from this full-time position. The student must be enrolled as a traditional full-time undergraduate student (minimum 12 hours each semester). This award is available for up to 10 semesters.

 

UMU Gift – up to $5,000

UMU Gift aid is awarded to students who file a FAFSA and are ineligible for other institutional funds. The student must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student (minimum 12 hours per semester) in the traditional undergraduate program full-time (minimum 12 hours each semester) and the award is available for up to a total of 10 semesters. This award is not need based.

 

Loans

Federal Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans
Subsidized and unsubsidized loans are federal student loans for eligible students to help cover the cost of higher education at a four-year college or university, community college, or trade, career, or technical school. The U.S. Department of Education offers eligible students at participating schools Direct Subsidized Loans and Direct Unsubsidized Loans.

Direct Subsidized Loans are for students with financial need. Students are not charged interest while in school at least half-time (minimum of 6 hours). Repayment begins 6 months after the student leaves school or drops to less than half-time.


Direct Unsubsidized Loans are available to undergraduate and graduate students; there is no requirement to demonstrate financial need. Interest accrues (accumulates) on an unsubsidized loan from the time it’s first paid out. You can, but are not required to, pay the interest while you are in school or during grace periods, deferments, or forbearance. Another option is to let the interest accrue and be capitalized (that is, added to the principal amount of your loan). If you choose not to pay the interest as it accrues, this will increase the total amount you have to repay because you will be charged interest on a higher principal amount.

Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans disbursed on or after 7/1/2017 and before 7/1/2018 have an interest rate of 4.45%. These loans also have a loan fee of 1.066%. This fee is deducted from each loan disbursement.

New borrowers of Direct Loans must complete Direct Loan Entrance Counseling and a Loan Agreement (MPN) online at www.studentloans.gov.

 

Direct Parent PLUS Loan
The parent borrower must be the student's biological or adoptive parent. (In some cases, the student's stepparent may be eligible.) The student must be a dependent student (according to the FAFSA). The Direct Parent PLUS Loan is based on a credit check completed by the Department of Education. Credit checks are valid for 180 days. Direct Parent PLUS loans disbursed on or after 7/1/2017 and before 7/1/2018 have an interest rate of 7.0%. These loans also have a loan fee of 4.264%. This fee is deducted from each loan disbursement.

To apply for a Federal Direct Parent PLUS Loan

Apply online at www.studentloans.gov. The parent will log in using their FSA ID. If the parent does not have an FSA ID, they will apply for one at finaid@mountunion.edu. After the parent is logged into StudentLoans.gov, they will click “Apply for a PLUS Loan”.

If approved, complete a Loan Agreement for a PLUS Loan (MPN) at the same site, https://studentloans.gov.

 

Private Education Loans
The private (alternative) education loan program is available to assist students in covering the remaining balance due after other financial aid has been considered. These non-federal loans are in addition to the student Federal loans already included in the student's financial aid award.

The interest rates will differ with each lender and accrues from the first date of disbursement. This loan is in the student's name, and typically the student needs a credit worthy co-signer in order for the loan to be approved. Generally, repayment begins after students graduate, or drop below 6 credit hours.  Search or Apply for a Private Loan.

 

Nurse Education Assistance Loan Program (OHIO)
The purpose of Nurse Education Assistance Loan Program is to provide financial assistance to Ohio students enrolled for at least half-time study (or accepted for enrollment) in approved Ohio pre-licensure nurse education program who intend to serve as nurses after graduation. The annual award for the most recent academic year was $1,500/year. In exchange, to qualify for loan cancellation, recipients must be employed full-time as a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse in the State of Ohio for a minimum of five years after graduation.

Canton Student Loan Foundation
Students can receive $12,000 total toward their undergraduate education and an additional $8,000 if they continue on to graduate school. Eligible students must:

  • Graduate from a Stark County high school; be a Stark County resident who was eligible to graduate from a Stark County high school but has graduated from a high school elsewhere; or have earned a diploma from the ABC (A Better Chance) program.
  • Enroll for at least 12 credit hours per term in a post high-school, undergraduate degree-granting program. This includes associate degree, technical-school and trade-school programs.
  • Have and maintain minimum term and cumulative grade point averages of 2.0.

Federal Work Study

  • Federal Work Study is a need-based fund awarded to the student. Not all students are eligible for this program.
  • Both tax withholding forms and work authorization forms must be completed BEFORE beginning any campus job.
  • If an eligible student does not work, they will earn $0 from the federal work study program.

The Federal Work Study Program provides part-time jobs for students with financial need, allowing them to earn money to help pay education expenses. The program encourages community service work and work related to the student’s course of study.

The Office of Student Financial Aid will determine eligibility. If Federal Work Study is listed in the student’s financial aid package, they are not guaranteed a job. Students can also work on campus if they are not awarded Federal Work Study. First year students can earn up to $1800 and upperclassmen can earn up to $2500.

Students are responsible for securing employment on campus. They may look on the “Student Job Book” on iRaider (the University’s portal) or by inquiring in person about potential openings in various departments on campus. Monthly earnings (minimum wage rate) go directly to the student and can be used as payment toward the student account or used as spending money while at school.
