Schooler Lecture Tickets Available
January 4, 2013
ALLIANCE, Ohio — Complimentary tickets are now available for the University of Mount Union’s 2013 Schooler Lecture featuring Newark, New Jersey Mayor Cory A. Booker.
The lecture is slated for 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 6, 2013 in the Timken Gymnasium. Booker will speak on “How to Change the World with Your Bare Hands.” Walk-up tickets are available the day of the event until the lecture begins at 8 p.m.
Booker made headlines recently as he opened his home and personally delivered supplies and food to Newark residents who were impacted by Hurricane Sandy. In addition, following a conversation on Twitter, Booker recently initiated the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Challenge in which he lived on a SNAP (formerly known as food stamps) equivalent food budget for seven days. According to his website, Booker’s goals for the challenge were to raise awareness and understanding of food insecurity, reduce the stigma of SNAP participation, elevate innovative local and national food justice initiatives and amplify compassion for individuals and communities in need of assistance.
According to the Greater Talent Network, Booker took the oath of office as mayor of New Jersey’s largest city in July 2006 following a sweeping electoral victory and was re-elected for a second term in another overwhelming majority in 2010. Booker has a bold vision for the City of Newark, and the city’s mission is to set a national standard for urban transformation by marshaling its resources to achieve security, economic abundance and an environment that is nurturing and empowering for individuals and families.
As his second term gets underway, Booker and his administration have made meaningful strides toward achieving the city’s mission. As of July 1, 2008, Newark led the nation among large cities for reductions in shootings and murders, achieving decreases of more than 40 percent in both categories. Radical transformation of the Newark Police Department under Booker’s leadership, along with the deployment of more than 100 surveillance cameras throughout the city, has led to Newark setting the nationwide pace for crime reduction.
About the Schooler Lecture
The Schooler Lecture Series was established in 1988 with grant funding from the Schooler Family Foundation. The Foundation's philanthropy has enabled the University to provide a dramatically enhanced opportunity for young men and women studying at Mount Union and for the residents in the greater Alliance area to experience the breadth and depth of American culture.
