Mount Union was the perfect distance from home- I could still go home if I needed to, but I was still far enough away so that I could learn and embrace independence. The campus also just felt like home.
The Best Parts of Mount Union
The thing I like most about Mount are the class sizes. The classes are small enough that there is ample opportunity to have one-on-one learning time if necessary. In addition, the people of Mount Union, both students and faculty, are some of the best people around. Nearly everyone is quick to help a person in need and come together as one big community when need be.
Small School, Big Reputation
Mount Union is a small university in comparison to most schools. However, the university still has a very strong academic and athletic record. It is rare for such a small school to have as large of a reputation as Mount Union- not only on the field, but also in the workplace.
Wherever you go; get involved. The best way to meet people and feel comfortable at college is by getting involved in some sort of organization or activity. Getting involved will also improve your resume and allow you to create connections with not only students and faculty on campus, but also with the community.
Why Computer Science?
I’ve always had a strong interest in technology. Job security is also a very important aspect that I took into consideration when I selected my major. The area of computer science is a rapidly growing field in which the tools are always changing, so there will always be the opportunity to learn something new.
Many of the class sessions in the computer science major at Mount Union allow for lab-based exercises in which the concepts discussed in class, are put into practice. This helps hands-on learners like myself, learn a lot in a short period of time. For example, Network Security, one of my favorite classes, adapts this teaching style. This class provides insight into the world of computer security which is nearly always mentioned in the daily news. This class allows for hands-on learning with a professor from the actual security field who teaches practicality over theory. Consequently, the class is fun and also impactful.
My ultimate goal is to one day become a CTO or CFO of an organization. Mount Union is providing me with the education I need and with the workplace connections that may not necessarily be available to students in a larger school, where interaction amongst faculty and students is limited.
It is rare for such a small school to have as large of a reputation as Mount Union - not only on the field, but also in the workplace.
