January 21, 2009
The Mount Union College Department of Music will present the Simple Gifts Duo of Linda Littleton and Karen Hirshon on Monday, January 26 at 8 p.m. in Presser Recital Hall.
Combining tradition with innovation, Simple Gifts creates arrangements from a variety of ethnic folk styles.
Littleton began her musical studies with classical violin lessons at the age of seven. She has served as principal second violin in the Nittany Valley Symphony. Littleton also plays hammered dulcimer, bowed psaltery, 5-string banjo and recorders.
Hirshon began violin lessons at the age of ten and began studying folk guitar three years later. She has toured nationally with the bluegrass band Whetstone Run and helped found the American old-time group, Rustical Quality String Band, with which she has released two albums. She also plays baritone fiddle, mandolin, banjolin, banjo-guitar and a variety of percussion instruments.
Presser Recital Hall is located within Cope Music Hall on the corner of Union Avenue and Simpson Street on Mount Union's campus. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the Department of Music at (330) 823-2180.
