Solo Con Tutti Concert to be Held April 17
April 08, 2011
The Alliance Symphony Orchestra and the University of Mount Union will present a Solo con Tutti concert Sunday, April 17 at 3 p.m. in the Alliance High School Auditorium. The concert will feature solo performances by the 2010 Solo con Tutti Concerto and Aria Competition winners – flutist Drew Duncan of Massillon, pianist Jennifer Grant of the University of Mount Union and pianist Allyson Oyster of Alliance. The concert is being sponsored by Goris-Meadows Insurance Agency.
Duncan, the winner of the high school category, will perform Cecile Chaminade’s Concertino for flute and orchestra. He is currently the principal flutist of the Canton Youth Symphony and performs with the Stark County Honors Flute Choir.
Jennifer Grant, a sophomore at the University of Mount Union and winner of the collegiate category, and Allyson Oyster, winner of the community category will perform movements from Dmitri Kabalevsky’s piano concerto no. 3 in d major. Both performers are students of Dr. Maira Liliestedt, assistant professor of music at Mount Union.
In addition to accompanying the soloists, the 70-member community and student orchestra will perform the overture to La princesse jaune by Camille Saint-Saëns and the Capriccio espagnol by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.
The orchestra is under the direction of Eric Benjamin. Benjamin, a graduate of New England Conservatory of Music, has served as the director of the Harvard Mozart Society Orchestra and the Akron Symphony. During his 11-year stint with the Akron Symphony, he also served as director of the Akron Youth Symphony and guest conducted the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra, Erie Philharmonic, Canton Symphony, Columbus Symphony and numerous student festivals.
He has composed for and collaborated with a variety of musicians and arts organizations such as Alex Bevan, the Actors/Summit Theater Company and the Children’s Ballet Theater of Akron. He wrote and produced Klassical Kids, a program that ran for seven years and won first prize for excellence in education from the Fine Arts Radio International. He also was named Ohio Music Teachers’ Association Composer of the Year in 2000.
The annual Solo con Tutti competition is a collaborative effort between the University of Mount Union and the Alliance Symphony Orchestra. The concerto competition showcases the exceptional talent of area musicians and the unique opportunity to perform with a community orchestra. Each participant is required to perform one or more movements of a standard concerto, vocal aria, single-movement work or a concert piece with orchestral accompaniment.
Tickets are $8 for seniors, $10 for adults and free for children and students. Arts in Stark and Alliance Concert Association cardholders receive two for one ticket price. Tickets can be purchased at the door or in advance at the Alliance Chamber of Commerce. For more information, contact orchestra manager Cynthia Kreiner at (330) 829-8102.
