Recruitment

This will prove to be a very exciting time for you as you consider joining the sorority community of Mount Union. We are thrilled to see that you are interested in exploring the opportunity of “Greek Life” on campus. The four sorority chapters are full of outstanding and dedicated women who are looking forward to meeting and getting to know you! The members of sorority life at Mount Union have found being part of the Greek community has created a once in a lifetime opportunity that has assisted in shaping them in to leaders, scholars and citizens. Sisterhood is something that lasts a lifetime – the bonds of sorority last long beyond your years as a student at the University. You will carry this experience and those bonds with you throughout your life. It is our hope that you will have the same positive experience that each of our members and alumnae have and that you too will benefit from all this unique opportunity has to offer to you!

What is "Recruitment?"
To join, or “affiliate” with a sorority at Mount Union interested students participate in the process called recruitment. The Office of Student Involvement and Leadership encourages all students to consider membership at any point during their collegiate experience. We strongly encourage you to look at each individual organization for the unique opportunity that it could provide for you. Think of each recruitment event as a way to learn much about the members of each organization, the values and purpose of each chapter, the benefits of joining a fraternity or sorority, and the commitments required for membership.

The Office of Student Involvement and Leadership requires all interested female students to sign up for recruitment, as it is a way to indicate your interest to our sorority chapters. The Mount Union Panhellenic Council organizes our recruitment process.

Recruitment begins October 2, 2014 and concludes on October 5. The schedule is provided for you once you’ve signed up to participate. Cost to participate in recruitment is $5 per person (not refundable - $5 pays for the use of our computer system as well as the budget for the week itself). Once you sign up for recruitment, you’ll be assigned to a Recruitment Counselor or Rho Gamma, who will assist you in participating. Each Rho Gamma is a disaffiliated member of a sorority, meaning she’s given up her letters to help you find yours! She’s an objective, fair minded individual with the intention of guiding you through the recruitment process. Once you’ve signed up for recruitment, you will receive an email from her and be sure to follow up and ask her lots and lots of your questions – no question should go unanswered!

Do we have to have a specific grade point average to join?
Academic excellence is one of the ideals upon which Greek organizations were founded, and our chapters support the premise that academic responsibilities should unquestionably receive the highest priority throughout the student’s academic career at the University. To this end, fraternities and sororities require a minimum grade point average for both joining and for remaining a member throughout their time as an undergraduate student. It should also be noted that the all-fraternity and all-sorority grade point average has met or exceeded the all-campus grade point average every semester!

A student must be enrolled as a full-time at the University of Mount Union student. In order to join a sorority at the University, a female student must have attained a minimum college grade point average as is required by the individual chapter:

  • Alpha Chi Omega: 2.60 college grade point average; 3.00 high school grade point average
  • Alpha Delta Pi: 2.60 college grade point average; 3.00 high school grade point average
  • Alpha Xi Delta: 2.60 college grade point average; 3.00 high school grade point average
  • Delta Sigma Tau: 2.75 college grade point average; 3.00 high school grade point average

What is the cost of sorority membership?
The cost of joining a sorority at the University of Mount Union ranges from $300 to $500 for the year, with the most cost involved during your first semester of membership. You should budget for approximately $500 just in case. The amount is larger due to initiation fees, national dues (if applicable) and insurance costs. It also includes your membership pin and certificate. During the course of your time in sorority, your costs include national and local fees that pay for such activities as formals, sisterhood events, and other incidentals such as t-shirts or other items with your new sorority letters on them. If cost is prohibitive, we encourage you to be in touch with the director of student involvement (carnelke@mountunion.edu) or the individual chapters’ treasurers in order to see if arrangements could be made for you. Many options are available, all you need to do is ask!
