Student Showcase Recital Planned
February 14, 2013
ALLIANCE, Ohio — The University of Mount Union’s Department of Music will present a student showcase recital at 11:15 a.m. on Thursday, February 21 in Presser Recital Hall.
Featured performers are junior music education major Alex Garner of Cuyahoga Falls, OH, soprano; junior music education major Demi Lohr of Ravenna, OH, piano; senior music performance major Ian LeRoy ’14 of Orwell, OH, piano and freshman Rachel Beach of Bolivar, OH, flute. Faculty members Bohdan Subchak and Nancy Howenstine will accompany on the piano.
Meadowlark, by Stephen Schwartz, comes from the popular musical The Baker’s Wife. Sung by Alex Garner, the song is sung from the perspective of a woman trying to decide if she should stay with her husband or run away with a younger man. She compares her situation to a fairytale about a meadowlark that lives with a king who loves her, but is tempted by another. In the end, the woman leaves with the younger man.
Other works performed by the students include pieces by Beethoven, Richard Strauss, Enrique Granados and Ernest Bloch.
The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the Department of Music at (330) 823-2180.
About Student Showcase Recitals
The Department of Music sponsors recitals for student performers throughout the semester. Scheduled on selected Thursday mornings, these recitals offer students the chance to present solo literature to an audience. All music majors and minors, in all degree programs, perform on student recitals as a soloist at least once each semester.
