Students Attend College Media Advisers National Convention

Six students from Mount Union College attended the College Media Advisers National Convention in New York City from March 15-17.
At the conference, students attended sessions and keynote addresses that taught them how to better advance the media studies program at Mount Union.
Keynote addresses of the conference included Byron Pitts, Brian Storm, and Charles Gibson.
Byron Pitts, CBS news correspondent, shared his story of success in the business with students. Pitts has covered many of the biggest stories of the past few years, including coverage of Sept. 11, 2001. In his time in the media industry, Pitts has received numerous awards including a National Emmy Award for his coverage of the Chicago train wreck in 1999.
Brian Storm, president of MediaStorm, spoke to students about the importance of media outlet convergence. He stressed to students that they need to be aware of this change, and work towards creating multimedia presentations to create story packages. He also shared some of his recent multimedia work from MediaStorm.
Charles Gibson, ABC World News Tonight anchor, spoke to students about the changing media industry. He said that the news industry is dynamic, and students need to be ready for change. However, he urged them to keep working towards their career dreams, as they will be rewarded in seeing their work and knowing that people are informed by it.
Sessions from the conference offered information on media convergence, newspaper design, web trafficking, writing workshops, internship tips, and much more.
Through these sessions, students were informed of the newest tips for media professionals.
Mount Union also had the opportunity to have their newspaper critiqued by new media perspectives, to get ideas for improving it.
The conference also offered students media tours of the top print, online, and multimedia companies that they may be working for after graduation. Popular tours included The New York Times building, CNBC studios, and Sports Illustrated.
