Students Interact with Industry Professionals

February 20, 2012

The eighth annual Sport Sales Workshop and Job Fair, presented by the University of Mount Union, Cleveland Cavaliers and Cleveland Indians, was held on Friday, February 10 at the Quicken Loans Arena and Progressive Field in Cleveland, OH. The nearly 100 students from 16 colleges and universities from six states who attended were provided with successful sales techniques, the opportunity to network with professionals in the sports industry and the chance to gain valuable interviewing experience.
Following an opening session presentation on ticket sales given by Charlie Chislaghi, president of Sports Sales Consulting and one of the premier sports sales trainers in the country, participants received nearly four hours of personalized sport sales training. The dynamic and interactive sales training was given by some of the most successful sales professionals in the sport industry including representatives from the Charlotte Bobcats, Atlanta Hawks, New York Knicks, Orlando Magic, Pittsburgh Pirates, Lake Erie Monsters, San Antonio Spurs, New York Yankees, Cleveland Cavaliers, Cleveland Indians, Portland Trailblazers, Oakland Raiders, Chicago Sky and Detroit Pistons, among other teams.
With ticket sales being the best opportunity to find employment in the sport industry, the experiences and skills gained at the Sport Sales Workshop and Job Fair gave participants a head start for a promising career. The training sessions provide participants with the unique opportunity to “audition” for entry level sales positions. Participants left not only with information, but also with actual skill development, making it more of a workshop format than traditional conference.

According to Dr. Jim Kadlecek, associate professor of human performance and sport business at Mount Union, chair of the Department of human performance and sport business and Sport Sales Workshop director, the workshop is really an attempt to serve the industry by providing sport professionals with an opportunity to recruit and interview new sales talent. At the same time, this event provides students with valuable insights and networking opportunities, all the while improving their preparation for a career in sport sales. In fact, more than half of the graduating seniors who attended last year’s workshop received job offers at the Sport Sales Workshop and Job Fair.
