Students Present Annual Medieval Festival
April 13, 2010
Mount Union College students recently held the annual Medieval Renaissance Fair in the Campus Grounds on Tuesday, December 2.
Sophomore Michael Wheeler of Massillon and sophomore Jo Harvey of Massillon perform a dance from the Medieval period.
The fair began with dinner prepared by Mount Union Food Service. There were also musical selections played by senior Tanya Simmerer (clarinet), Diane Thomas, secretary to the vice president of advancement (flute) and senior Myra Francis (oboe) to accompany the meal.
Following dinner, students performed readings from Shakespearean and medieval literature and scenes from the plays "Everyman" and "A Midsummer Night's Dream." Students also presented a sword fight and choreographed medieval dancing.
Students manage every aspect of the fair, including publicity, menu planning, performance, costumes and programs. The students presenting the fair are in the English Renaissance and Shakespeare classes of English professors Dr. John Bienz and Dr. Kate McMahon. Both Bienz and McMahon said they were impressed with the students' work.
The Medieval Renaissance Fair has been held since the mid-nineties and provides an opportunity for students to perform and plan an event.
