Symphony to Perform at Carnation Festival
August 11, 2011
The Alliance Symphony Orchestra, comprised of many University of Mount Union faculty members and students, will perform during the 2011 Greater Alliance Carnation Festival.
The Alliance Symphony Orchestra will perform on Wednesday, August 17 from 7-9 p.m. at Silver Park during Days in the Park. This year, the concert will premiere a new arrangement written especially for the occasion by conductor Eric Benjamin. When Clyde D. Douglass’ Carnation Rag Two Step was originally published in 1903, it was for solo piano. Benjamin has expanded on the original with full orchestration and the special artistic touches he is so well known for.
Other pieces on the eclectic program include Scott Free rag by Mount Union professor James Perone, a medley of Duke Ellington’s hits, a medley from Bernstein’s West Side Story, a Brahms Hungarian Dance, Procession of the Sardar, Banjo and Fiddle and Stars and Stripes Forever by Sousa, among other songs.
The Alliance Symphony Orchestra Big Band will also perform at Days in the Park on Thursday, August 18 from 6-9 p.m. Under the direction of Bryan Stehura, this performance is one that big band enthusiasts will not want to miss.
In case of inclement weather, both performances will be held on the campus of the University of Mount Union in Rodman Playhouse, located on the corner of Union Avenue and Vincent Street.
