Technology Check List

The Office of Information Technology is providing new students with a recommendation checklist of items to bring with them to Mount Union. This list helps ensure that students are better prepared to utilize technology resources offered by Mount Union.  

Computer and Printer 
It is not required that students provide their own computers. However, it is highly recommended that they do. This provides the student the ability to work on and print assignments at his or her convenience. There are several 24 hour computer labs on campus if you are unable to provide your own computer and printer. However, as of Fall 2007, the Environmental Print Policy was implemented, which limits the number of pages a student can print for free.  

Network Card 
While most new computers have a network interface connection built in, you may need to purchase a network interface card (NIC) if you have an older computer. This NIC will provide you with the ability to connect your computer to the campus network. If you do not have a NIC in your computer already and need assistance getting the older system configured, contact the Information Technology Helpdesk.  

Ethernet Network Cable 
This cable is required for all computers without a wireless NIC to connect to the campus network. A free cable is provided by the Office of Information Technology to all incoming students during Preview. If you need a longer cord than the one we initially provide, they are available at local discount or computer stores.  

Coaxial Cable 
This cable allows students to connect a TV in their residence hall room to the campus cable network. Only one coaxial connection is available for each room. Mount Union does not provide incoming students with a coaxial cable, so students must bring their own.  

Telephone 
Each residence hall room provides students with one phone jack connection.  If a student wants to use this connection they must first request that the line is made live.  Students are responsible for providing their own phone. We advise checking with your roommate and planning accordingly.

Power Strip 
While each room in the residence halls provides several outlets, it is common for students with a lot of electronics to run out of them. A power strip will provide additional outlets to the student, and many also provide surge protection.  

Headphones 
Most students at Mount Union are required to take a foreign language class or two. Many language classes have required audio assignments in which the student must listen to a recording and write an answer. While we do provide a language lab on campus that has headphones provided, it is often more convenient to have your own headphones and complete the assignment in any lab on campus. For students that prefer to listen to music while they work in the labs, using headphones is a courteous way to avoid distracting others.
