My favorite class has actually been Introduction to Psychology. When I came to Mount Union, I didn’t really know what I wanted to major in, but after taking this class I knew I wanted to learn more. I thought it was fascinating to learn about the prominent psychologists throughout history and the methods they used to get their results. It was like dipping a toe in the water before jumping in.

MY EXCEPTIONAL STORY
Selling points
The comfortable campus size and the great student-to-faculty ratio were both major selling points for why I came to Mount Union. In addition, the opportunity to participate in the Presidential Scholarship Competition deepened my interest in the University. But in the end, I chose to come to Mount Union because it’s what my gut told me to do. The feeling of a tight-knit community was something that was missing from the other colleges and universities I visited.
Laid back and relaxing spot
My favorite place on campus would probably have to be Campus Grounds, which is located in the Hoover-Price Campus Center. Not only does it have good food at an affordable price, but it provides a laid back and relaxing atmosphere. Whether you’re casually studying with a group, watching sports on the TV or attending an event, it’s the place to be on campus.
A chance to stand out
What sets Mount Union apart from other schools is that every student has an equal chance to stand out. The small class sizes and the large number of organizations established on campus allow you to make a name for yourself if you put forth the effort.
The study of people
I chose to major in psychology simply because I enjoy studying people. The mind is a very intricate thing, and researchers in the field continue to gather more and more insight into why people think and act the way they do. In addition, there are a number of areas that psychology can be applied. Many people think that if you go to school for psychology, you have to become a therapist, but that is far from the truth. You can pursue a number of different careers in fields such as education, law, advertising and social work.
Campus life satisfaction
My favorite hands-on experience in my major so far has been a survey we conducted as part of a Research and Statistical Methods course. The hypothesis we chose regarding campus life satisfaction was an interesting one, and the overall experience gave me a feel for how to conduct and compile research in a timely manner.
Wanting to learn more

Help every step of the way
My favorite professor is Dr. Sarah Torok, associate professor of psychology. She taught Child and Adolescent Development during my sophomore year, and not only did I like how she taught the class, but I also enjoyed our conversations outside of the classroom. During this time, I asked her to be my advisor, and she has been nothing but helpful ever since. From creating an academic spreadsheet to help keep me on track to talking about the Cleveland Indians, she has always been there for me. My future is all but certain, but she continues to help me every step along the way.
Working on a college campus
My ultimate career goal is to work on a college campus. Whether I have a job as a psychology professor or in an administrative office like student affairs, I know I want to continue to work and thrive in this type of environment. My parents are both educators, so I think it runs in my blood. I have always wanted to work in an educational setting, and Mount Union has shown me that this is definitely the type of setting I would enjoy.
