University of Mount Union Plans Baccalaureate

ALLIANCE, Ohio — The University of Mount Union will hold its 166th Baccalaureate service at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 5 in the Peterson Field House of the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex. This program will precede the University’s Commencement ceremony to be held at 1:30 p.m.
During the student-organized worship service, Mount Union’s Inspirational Voices of Praise gospel choir, directed by Barbara A Lyons, will perform several numbers. Call to Worship will be given by senior mathematics major Chris Hershberger of Apple Creek, OH and invocation will be given by senior early childhood education major Emily Kominko of Independence, OH. Senior biochemistry major Holly Cappelli of Chagrin Falls, OH will serve as song leader and senior English: literature major Greg Smith of Concord Township, OH will give a scripture lesson. The Rev. Marty CashBurless, University chaplain, will lead the Passing the Peace. Senior sport business major Michael Gregg of Richmond Heights, OH will give the pastoral prayer and Dr. Ivory Lyons Jr., associate professor of philosophy and religious studies and assistant to the president for diversity affairs, will introduce the preacher.
The Rev. Kevin J. Bedford Sr., retired United States Navy Commander and senior pastor of Third Baptist Church of Toledo, OH, will give the sermon, “Moving Beyond Your Fears.” In the winter of 2010, Bedford retired after 24 years of military service as director of religious and cultural affairs of the United States Navy. A native of Chicago, IL, he is an ordained clergyperson in the American Baptist Churches. He has served the church in a variety of leadership roles including executive pastor, director of corporate social responsibility, university chaplain at Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, military chaplain and pastor of Union Church in Hiroshima, Japan.
Following the sermon, Dr. Richard F. Giese, president of the University, will lead the Seniors’ Prayer.
