University of Mount Union to host “The Healing Tree”

September 05, 2017

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Office of Alcohol, Drug and Wellness at the University of Mount Union is hosting an event to raise health awareness, reduce social stigma and support helpful dialogue around mental health and addiction issues. The event will take place Wednesday, September 6 at 10 a.m. in the Hoover-Price Campus Center.

The Healing Tree is a public art project sponsored by StarkMHAR and ArtsinStark. People are invited to share their own or a loved one's story of recovery from mental illness or addiction or offer words of encouragement for those in recovery onto silver leaves. The leaves will hang from a tree sculpture created by artist Michele Waalkes. The Healing Tree will travel around Stark County when it is finished in an effort to help reduce the stigma surrounding addiction and mental illness as well as to provide a hopeful perspective for those in recovery and to increase empathy in the community toward people struggling with mental illness and addition.

The Office of Alcohol, Drug and Wellness department is excited to have this opportunity to be a part of this experience, and would love to get as many members of the community involved.
