Violet Bica-Ross ’44 Selected For Centennial Alumni Award

ALLIANCE, Ohio – University of Mount Union alum Violet Bica-Ross ’44 has been selected as the recipient of Kent State University’s 2015 Centennial Alumni Award.
Bica-Ross lived in Alliance, Ohio and attended Mount Union where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree. In 1952, she attended and graduated from Kent State where she earned a Master’s in Education degree.
Bica-Ross became a second grade teacher at the same elementary school she attended and also became a teacher with the Alliance Board of Education from 1945-1953. She had a long and illustrious career as a school psychologist in several districts including Maple Heights Board of Education from 1954-1956; Cleveland Heights Board of Education from 1956-1961 and Shaker Heights Board of Education from 1961-1976. She retired in 1976. A gift from Bica-Ross made the residence hall named for her possible at the University of Mount Union in 1997.
Her professional leadership included serving as president of the Kent-Akron Area School Psychologists (1959-1960) and the Cleveland Area School Psychologists (1962-1963) and secretary of the Ohio School Psychologists Association. She was a charter member of the National Association of School Psychologists. She also served on the editorial board of School Counselor Journal (1962-1964) and was a delegate at many national conventions. She served as a visiting instructor at Ball State Teachers’ College at the 1961 summer seminar Guidance Institute. Bica-Ross is a life member of the Ohio Educational Association and an honorary member of the Ohio School Psychologists Association. She is a member of Kent State University’s Herrick Society. She was a member of the Kappa Delta Sorority; an honorary member of Kappa Delta Pi.
