April 06, 2010
ALLIANCE, Ohio - Stephen Fannin, Stephon Harris and Lee Sharpnack led West Branch High School's Academic Challenge team to victory at the 23rd annual Academic Challenge held Sunday afternoon in Mount Union Theatre.
Nine teams, including defending champion Alliance High School, competed in the challenge, which is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Alliance in conjunction with Mount Union College.
A five-round competition, the West Branch Warriors defeated teams from Waterloo and United in the second round of the competition with a score of 200 points. This earned them a seat in the finals where they competed against teams from Minerva and Salem for the trophy and won with a score of 240.
Since the community program was launched in March of 1979, the focus of the Academic Challenge has been to recognize, reward and encourage students to excel in academic endeavors. Kiwanis Club presents the traveling trophy to the victors and Mount Union provides a $4000 scholarship to a student from the victorious school who is planning to enroll at Mount Union.
