Do you play the flute? Are you interested in continuing to play either as a music major or just for your own pleasure and enjoyment? You will find a supportive and encouraging environment here at Mount Union. Lessons of 30 or 60 minutes weekly are available for all and all are encouraged to perform on the weekly student showcases. Music majors plan and perform recitals in their junior or senior year. Some choose to share programs, while others research and develop programs on a specific topic as a Senior Independent study.

Stark County Honors Flute ChoirWe are happy to announce that Mount Union is once again sponsoring the Stark County Honors Flute Choir. This select group, first organized in 1992, was created to provide talented high school flutists with the opportunity to rehearse and perform regularly with others of the same caliber. It has given these outstanding musicians a vehicle for playing interesting and challenging music in a variety of musical settings.
Between 1992 and 2014 the Stark County Honors Flute choir presented concerts for churches, music study groups, retirement homes, civic organizations and public schools. The group was invited to participate and perform at the Central Ohio Flute Festival at Ohio State, the Northeast Ohio Flute Festival at The University of Akron, and the Youngstown State University Flute Festival. They had the opportunity to attend masterclasses and performances by prominent flutists such as Jean-Pierre Rampal, Julius Baker, Carol Wincenc, Jim Walker, Bonita Boyd, and Walfrid Kujala. In 2017 the group reformed under the direction of Dr. Janet Becker.
The Stark County Honors Flute Choir will rehearse every Thursday at Cope Music Hall on the campus of Mount Union. Start date TBD by Dr. Becker. Our final concert will be at Mount Union in the Presser Recital Hall, where each student’s school, band director, and private instructor will be recognized.
Christmas Festival of FlutesAll flute players are invited to this free, participatory celebration. There will be music for all ages and all levels. Some music will be geared to the beginners, and other pieces will be more challenging. Everyone will have fun and all will participate. Band directors are invited to bring their flute sections, and pre-formed groups from schools, churches and the community are invited to come and share your favorite Christmas selection (5-8 minutes in length). These groups will open our concert at the end of the day.
