The Atmosphere of Mount
I first heard about Mount Union in middle school when they hosted the Power of the Pen competitions. I knew Mount Union had an excellent English department, so it was always one of my college choices. Senior year of high school, I visited campus again and fell in love with how beautiful it was. I love the small, personal class sizes as well, so the whole atmosphere is one of the main reasons why I chose Mount Union, along with the excellent academics.
As a commuter, I have not had the experience of actually living on campus. However, the small class sizes and friendly staff at Mount Union has helped make it feel like a second home. I have been able to get to know so many wonderful people just by being in several different classes with them throughout my college career. I have also had the same professors for many different classes, which is really helpful in getting to know them better and developing a closer relationship with them.
Declaring a Major
I don’t think there has ever been a time in my life in which I did not know I would go into the field of English and writing. I have been devouring books most of my life and I knew I wanted to be a writer when I was around eight or nine years old. I chose English specifically because it combined my love of reading and writing, and opened up several career opportunities. The field of English and writing/reading is grounded in being well-rounded people. The point of literature and writing is to raise important questions and to talk about and reveal truths about life. This would prove difficult, if not impossible, without exposure to different subjects, which is exactly what the Integrative Core provides.
A Career in English
My first experiential learning experience was attending the career fair in Columbus my second semester. It was required for my Careers in English and Writing class and, like the whole class itself, turned out to be a fun and enlightening experience. My ultimate career goal is to be an author and open up a bookstore. Mount Union is preparing me by helping me improve upon my writing, as well as providing me with skills that can be applied to various jobs so that I am not limited in the kind of career I can enter after graduation.
Choosing a College
Go with the campus where you feel most comfortable. Attending college is a big change, so don’t force yourself into an atmosphere in which you will not thrive.
