Mount Union professors really make an effort to get to know their students and build relationships with them.

First Year Initiatives

The first year of college is a critical time for students, where they will experience a great amount of personal

and academic growth. During this time they will make new friends, learn to live independently from their families and take courses that stretch and expand their knowledge and abilities. Students will also experience challenges in ways they never have before. It is the challenge that often makes or breaks a student’s success in college. The Office of First Year Initiatives, along with partners all over campus, strive to help students meet challenges head-on, so they can learn and grow from them and become successful both in and out of the classroom.

The Office of First Year Initiatives focuses on the transition within the first year through intentional programming and services, as well as, meaningful relationship building. First Year Initiatives encourages academic excellence through co-curricular learning, fosters the development of the whole student and provides a supportive community to learn and grow.

There are several ways in which the office addresses these areas, including new student Preview, Transfer Student Preview, fall and spring Orientation programs, and the yearlong Exceptional Beginnings Program. We also work in conjunction with other offices on the total first year experience including the New Student Communication series, First Year Seminars and the First Year Common Reading.
