Choosing Mount

My high school Spanish teacher was a Mount Union graduate. I chose to attend Mount Union because of the opportunities I felt I would have both within my major and in my co-curricular involvements. Mount Union was, without a doubt, the best fit for me. I am incredibly grateful to be a Trustee Scholar; however, I received a full tuition offer from my second-choice school. I chose to turn this offer down because of the opportunity I felt was available for me at Mount Union. I love that Mount Union is a small institution that fosters community between its students and faculty, but at the same time, Mount has a “bigger” campus feel that comes from the successful athletics and programing on campus. It really is the best of both worlds. Mount Union feels like home to me because of the student community. Not only have I met my best friends at Mount Union, but when I go to class, I know I will be surrounded by familiar faces who support me in my academic endeavors and challenge me to pursue new ideas.

Choosing A Path

I chose to be a communication studies major with goal of attending law school in mind. I felt that as a communication studies student, I would be best prepared for law school by sharpening my written and oral communication skills and gaining an understanding of communication relationships in different settings. My ultimate dream job is to be corporate counsel for Disney. For now, though, my goal is to gain admission to law school, graduate, pass the bar, and be able to give back to the public as an attorney. Mount Union has prepared me for law school by allowing me to improve my critical thinking skills and by giving me a variety of perspectives on life.  Mount Union’s emphasis on meaningful work and responsible citizenship has motivated me to want to find ways to give back as an attorney, and I look forward to finding that calling in law school.

Extra Opportunities

I picked up a psychology minor that was sparked by my integrative core classes. I have taken some amazing classes in the psychology department that have complimented my major and other minors and broadened my viewpoint by exposing me to another “piece of the puzzle.” I’m very grateful that the Integrative Core has given me a breadth of different perspectives. I feel that the Integrative Core is particularly valuable to me as an aspiring lawyer because my IC classes pushed me to think outside of my comfort zone. A liberal arts education where students have to take classes outside of their field of concentration compliments professional preparation by fostering adaptability, open-mindedness, and critical thinking skills. These are all valued traits in the workplace. Students with a liberal arts education are comfortable tackling the uncomfortable.

Advice to Students – Current and New

Get involved! There are so many unique opportunities for student involvement at Mount Union, and you truly have the chance to leave your mark on campus by being involved. Find a group that embodies your passions and make it your own! Mount Union is different from other universities because of the student body and faculty. You can’t walk across campus without exchanging a smile or a wave with a classmate. Further, students are so willing to help each other, whether that be in study groups or with co-curricular activities. The faculty are just as helpful, accessible, and eager to participate in co-curricular activities with their students.
