Building Relationships at Mount

I heard about Mount Union through one of my friends in high school. When touring the campus with my family, I instantly knew this was the school for me. I loved the small campus atmosphere and how friendly all of the students were to each other. The people on campus make Mount Union feel like a second home.  I originally thought I wanted a large school; however, after touring those campuses, I realized I liked the more personal experience offered at Mount Union. I have developed close relationships with not only students but the faculty as well. I came to Mount Union not knowing anyone and now I cannot imagine my life without all of the friendships I have made.

Nursing Experiences

I chose nursing as my major because I want a meaningful and fulfilling career. Nursing will provide me with opportunities for continued education throughout my life. It is a career that combines my love for math and science with caring for people. Through the nursing program, I am able to attend clinicals. I have been able to attend clinical rotations at various hospitals including Alliance Community Hospital, Akron General, Aultman Hospital, Summa St. Thomas, and Medina County Health Department. During these rotations, I am able to provide all aspects of patient care as directed by the nursing staff. This includes taking a patient’s vital signs, performing head-to-toe assessments, passing medications, and performing various procedures such as blood draws, dressing changes, IV insertions, catheter insertions, and tracheostomy care. To date, my favorite rotation is Critical Care. I love the complexity of each patient in the ICU setting.

Prepared for the Future

Integrative Core classes will make me a better professional in my field because they have helped me become a more well-rounded person. As a nurse, I will take care of people from all different faiths. Through my humanities class I have a better understanding of different religions, therefore, I can provide patients with the highest quality of patient-centered care. My ultimate career goal is to be a nurse on Life Flight. After graduation, I would like to start working in an ICU setting to gain the necessary critical care experience I need to become a flight nurse.  Mount Union is preparing me for this goal by providing me with real-world experiences through my clinical rotations. The nursing program at Mount Union has provided me with the quality education and confidence needed to thrive as a future medical professional.
