  • Curriculum

     

    As a major in multi-platform software development, you will complete courses that focus on programming and coding for various device types from smartphones and tablets to computers and servers. After completing the multi-platform software development major requirements, you will gain broad-based exposure to computer networks, databases and the latest web design techniques. Related courses in discrete mathematics and statistics will prepare you for a wide variety of career paths upon graduation.

  • Experiential Learning

     

    All majors in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science participate in team-based software projects as a requirement for graduation. Recent teams have worked with statistical data analysis, a campus navigation and event notification app for mobile devices and a live-streaming University weather feed. The teams must assign roles in order to attempt to maximize the strengths of each individual member and learn leadership skills in the process.

    Students have also assisted faculty in research into efficient calculation using extremely large integers, and on the ISETL system for symbolic mathematical calculation.

    For the Mobile Device Programming course, students have developed prototype apps for two departments within the University in recent years. Students worked with the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences to automate the recording of animal sounds in a field setting using a smartphone and to provide for easy classification and recall of recordings. Students have also worked inter-departmentally with faculty members in exercise science to develop apps for data collection and workout monitoring.

    Facilities and Equipment 

    The Computer Science Labs, located in the Kolenbrander-Harter Information Center, contains Windows workstations with access to Linux and OSX systems with a variety of specialized software, a computer projection system, and group project and study spaces. Besides the large, main lab, the department has two small labs for special projects.
