Choosing Mount Union
I learned about Mount Union through my own college search. When I was a junior in high school, I looked up colleges that were about an hour from my home. Mount Union was one of them. I visited here twice and got to sit in on a class. The class was what got me. Everyone was so kind and I felt like I was going to be okay here. I chose Mount Union because of their fantastic education program, size of campus, and the overall good feeling I got here. Mount Union feels like a second home because of all of my friends, professors, and the camaraderie we have here. The professors really have your back, and even if it isn't something academic they are more than willing to help you and be there for you. They know you by name, and if you aren't in class, they know. They take care of you here. I call Mount Union home more than I do my actual home.
Majoring In Education
I chose middle childhood education as my major because I really enjoy this age group. I always knew I wanted the middle grades, but being able to see them all was an experience. My favorite experience is my current pre-clinical placement. I'm in the Canton City School District in third, fourth, and fifth grade. This is my favorite so far because of my mentor teachers and students that I get to work with. Once I become a licensed teacher, I will be able to teach grades four through nine. These ages are just so fun for me because they are just so enjoyable to be around. I particularly love this age because they still want to please you, but they are old enough to get your jokes. I have been able to be in the classroom since my second semester at Mount Union. This was really beneficial because it allowed us to see all the age levels, and go from there.
Life After Mount
My ultimate dream job would be to teach in an inner city school. I love these students. They are my kind of people. I'd prefer to teach grades fourth or fifth, and particularly math. Mount Union is preparing me for this by placing me in the Canton City School District. This has allowed me to experience something that I want so bad with the support of mentor teachers. I believe my experience with the Integrative Core has also prepared to make me a better professional because I had to be proficient in writing and speaking. Everyone is going to write a letter or an email at some point. And every day I'm going to be getting up in front of 10 year-olds, so having the composure to speak in front of people has helped. It's a lot different doing it in front of peers than it is 10 year-olds — I'd pick 10 year-olds any day of the week.
Advice for Future Raiders
Do what you want. If you want it, you have to go for it. If I would have listened to certain people, I wouldn't be here right now. Oh, and definitely sit in on a class: that's where you get the real feeling if it's for you or not.
