A four-year, private institution grounded in the liberal arts, the University of Mount Union’s mission is to prepare students for fulfilling lives, meaningful work, and responsible citizenship. Alumnus and late Congressman Ralph Regula ’48 exemplified these qualities throughout his life’s work and time in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Ralph was well-known for his bipartisan nature and widely respected across party lines. Mount Union named its Center for Public Service after Ralph and his wife, Mary, as a way to honor his commitment to public service. The University and the Regula Center are also committed to honoring others in the political arena who exemplify the same qualities.
The Ralph and Mary Regula Center for Public Service at the University of Mount Union in Alliance, Ohio established the Spirit of America Award in 2018.
The award celebrates civility, cooperation, and bipartisanship by recognizing members of the U.S. House of Representatives who exemplify those values. The inaugural Spirit of America Awards were presented to a Jim Himes (R-Colorado) and Mike Coffman (D-Colorado), members of the U.S. House of Representatives who work in a spirit of bipartisan cooperation to find solutions that lead to legislative action.
