I’ve grown up around Mount Union as my parents have taught here for 15 years! I chose Mount because of the environment. I love the small school feel, the beautiful campus and the cultural balance of learning and extracurricular activities. The commitment of the faculty to education is tremendous and something that’s unique about UMU.
Adjusting to College
The atmosphere on campus gives Mount a special feel. You can’t go far without seeing a friendly face. In my case, being a part of the basketball team helped me adjust to college the most. The King Hall 3rd floor was a close second though!
Advice to Future Raiders
I would say that while it’s important to take logistical and financial considerations into account while making your college decision, you must ultimately choose with your heart because your next four years will help shape who you are for the rest of your life and that is a choice that only your heart can make.
I’ve always been interested in science and medicine, so biochemistry came naturally to me. Also, the program at Mount is phenomenal at preparing students for the MCAT and medical school. I wasn’t originally a Spanish major, but it came naturally after taking several classes at Mount and seeing how useful it could be for me in the medical field.
I’ve gotten the chance to intern in the Health Coach program at Alliance Community Hospital. This has allowed me to shadow several different types of healthcare professionals and work in primary care. It really has given me an appreciation of the lives that could be changed through good primary care and medical coordination. Additionally, I have had numerous research and laboratory experiences here at Mount that have enhanced my learning.
My favorite professor on campus is Dr. Keith Miller. Dr. Miller has not only taught me some of the most interesting material I have learned at Mount, but he has also pushed me to be a better student inside and outside of the classroom. He is a great example of a professor who is really invested in the learning of his students and willing to do whatever it takes to create an environment conducive to learning.
Liberal Arts Values
More than anything, I feel a liberal arts education makes me well-rounded as a student. This is an important quality in any person and valuable in any profession as versatility is key the evolving world of today.
My career goal is to become a doctor of some kind, open my own practice, and be able to do both local (US Based) and overseas mission work. Mount Union is making that goal possible by giving me a well-rounded, yet scientifically based education that will help me in my future studies and practice.
The atmosphere on campus gives Mount a special feel. You can’t go far without seeing a friendly face.
