University of Mount Union Online Pop-up Courses

Any current students as well as incoming first-year and transfer students for the 2021 fall semester will be able to take advantage of an opportunity to take one pop-up course for FREE. These pop-up courses are more relaxed, engaging learning experiences that introduce students to skills or topics that are not typically covered in traditional courses.
 

Offered as one credit courses, pop-up courses are one-week long and will be offered online during the summer semester, June 28 - July 30. Students who perform satisfactorily will have one credit hour added to their fall 2021 transcript at no cost. See the full list of pop-up courses and descriptions below, or get answers to some commonly asked questions. Each pop-up course will be capped at 25 students per course. Enrollment in pop-up courses will be first come, first serve.

Students are permitted to take no more than one course from the list below. As long as the student matriculates at the University of Mount Union in the spring, there is no cost for participation in these courses. If a student decides not to matriculate for the fall 2021 semester, they will be charged $425 for the 1 credit course.

Effective Learning Strategies

OFFERED: CLOSED

Do you prefer an audiobook, eBook, or hardcopy? Should you write your notes on paper or type them on a computer? Have you ever wondered what works best for you? This course will help you uncover your preferred personal learning strategies to make you the most effective student. During the course, we will experiment with different reading, writing, notetaking, and studying strategies to find the techniques and technology that works for you.  By the end of the course, you will develop a Personalized Learning Strategies Plan that identifies tools and strategies that will assist you in your future courses.
 

Digital Distractions: How to Reduce FOMO and Increase Productivity

Do you find yourself checking your phone unconsciously throughout the day? Do you feel phantom vibrations or hear nonexistent notifications in social settings? Do you check your phone before brushing your teeth in the morning? If so, you're not alone. Digital dependency is a wide-ranging problem and can pose a danger to our academic productivity, our mental health and wellness, and to our sense of self. This pop-up course will help you diagnose your digital diet, show you ways to make every phone pick-up more valuable, and help you practice self-care in an age of constant digital engagement.

 

Cooking Basics 101

OFFERED: JULY 19-23, JULY 26 - 30

Are you planning to live on Ramen noodles, toaster pastries, and pizza throughout the semester? As enticing as these dietary choices may be, this course will show you it is easier than you think to cook healthy and inexpensive food on your own. In this course you will learn the basics of cooking using the permitted kitchen tools of your dorm room. Recipes can also be adapted for students living in apartments or off-campus housing. We will examine safe food handling, serving sizes, budgeting basics, and how to read recipes. You will have the opportunity to cook and review recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks that you can make while on campus or any time! Note: This course is not geared towards those with significant dietary restrictions (e.g., gluten-free, vegan, etc.), but recipes can be made vegetarian. Some recipes may include nuts or nut butter

 

College Finances and Money Management: Can You Afford the Chips and Guac?

OFFERED: JULY 26 - 30

A college education is one of the most important investments you will ever make. By managing how you pay for school and what you spend money on, you can worry less about debt and more about your academic career. Your college years are a key time to pick up smart money habits, to begin building credit and to learn how to properly manage both a budget and debt. This course will provide you with the tools and resources to equip you with a foundation to make informed financial decisions during your time at Mount Union as well as in your career and life after graduation.
