ALLIANCE- Summer has just begun for the University of Mount Union, but it seems as if Autumn [Leaves] were closer with the return of the Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps.

Founded in 1972, and after 51 years active in the industry, the Bluecoats were finally back home in Stark County last year. Making new memories while reminiscing how and where they became "The Bluecoats," the famous competition band renewed their contract with the Purple Raiders to host their spring training.

“Autumn Leaves” as mentioned above, is the Bluecoats’ corps song honoring their first Finals appearance in 1987. With 200 members, ages 17- 20.5, the Corps are thrilled to be on our campus, filling it with vibration and doing what they love!

“Members in the Corps age out of competition at age 21,” said Michael “Mike” Scott, chief executive officer for the Bluecoats. “So, members are in the organization for four years, but if they have a summer birthday, they age out at age 22, what is known as their rookie year.”

The corps organization has hosted their spring training at other institutions such as Dennison University and Indiana Wesleyan University. Scott stated that “the stars aligned” when the organization chose to return to Stark County.

“The pandemic made us return to where everything began; we couldn’t be happier. Mount Union had every resource and facility that we needed,” said Scott.

Throughout their spring training the Bluecoats follow a rigorous and productive schedule. With only one day off, the rest of their week begins at 8 a.m. and ends at 10 p.m.

The members’ morning routine focuses on the visual component, practicing their dance moves. The afternoon is designated for sectionals and ensemble practice.

From instructors, designers, managing, medical and operations team, the corps members had a large support system dedicated to providing them a unique experience.

“I find preparing kids for competitions challenging and rewarding because this is a life-changing experience any kid dreams of,” said Scott. “They are why we do what we do.”

Culminating their stay last year, the Bluecoats hosted their world premiere, “The Garden of Love” on July 1st where members of the Alliance and campus communities gathered to appreciate their talent. As their stay is just beginning this year, stay tuned for the eventful summer they will offer to Alliance.

“The Bluecoats brought a great deal of awareness to Alliance, additional visitors to our campus and community, and a positive economic impact to the area,” said Melissa Gardner, vice president for marketing at Mount Union. “We were thrilled with their willingness to engage with the University and Alliance communities during their stay.”
