Family Atmosphere
I chose Mount Union for the people I met on my visit. It was a very personable, family-type atmosphere and when I left campus (after my visit) I pretty much had made my decision that I wanted to come to Mount Union.
Helpful Mentors
The guy that I was closest with was my mentor, my coach, Ron Lynn ’66. He had a big influence on me coming to Mount. He ended up coaching the defensive backs for the four years that I was there, and he also was an assistant baseball coach.
Mount Union Memories
For the last 18 years or so, there have been about five of my fraternity brothers that, every year, pick a game and they come in for the weekend. They've done this for a long time. And we stay in touch. I don't get a lot of time to communicate with them, but we get to catch up every year on the old guys and how everything is going.
Starting a Career
After Mount, I went to graduate school and was a graduate assistant at Kent State. I was very grateful to be with a successful coach, Don James, and when he went to Washington, I went out to the University of Washington with him as a part-time coach and during my short time there, I was hired as the defensive backfield coach at the University of Hawaii. That started a long trip in college football to a number of places. Ohio State was my last college job, and I had always wanted to coach at Ohio State, being an Ohio boy. And from there, I got into a long career of professional football.
Giving Back
I'm kind of at the point where I enjoy giving back to people who helped me along the way. I've been so blessed to have great mentors and people who cared about my career. I don't know whether I will be coaching anymore, but I certainly like to be able to give back to people that have helped me through my career.
