During the fall of 2024, the University embarked on a process to identify core values to complement and strengthen our institution’s mission, vision, and purpose statements. To ensure a thoughtful and inclusive approach, we conducted a series of exercises with campus constituents. Through this process, approximately 200 members of our campus community participated, providing valuable insights and perspectives.
During the exercise, we asked faculty, staff, students, and trustees to reflect on potential core values for our institution, initially as individuals, and secondly, in small groups. Each small group then submitted three to five proposed core values on which they had reached consensus. The feedback gathered during these sessions led to the proposition of three core values – belonging, excellence, and integrity.
You will find a detailed description of each of these values below, which reflects how we define that particular value within the Mount Union community. You’ll note that, within the descriptions, several words are highlighted in purple. These are all values that were submitted as part of the work of the small groups mentioned above, and we were intentional about including as many of them as possible so that participants could see their input reflected in the resulting core values definitions.
