For both degrees, I chose Mount Union because both the classroom and extracurricular environments met what I needed. I really liked the small class sizes because I felt I could really connect with the professor and the material. The people you meet on campus makes Mount Union feel like a second home. I met some of my closest friends during my time at Mount Union and I am so grateful for them.
Choosing A Path
I chose Biology as my major because I always appreciated and excelled in the sciences. I wanted to go into the medical field, so I focused on the courses that would help me build my understanding about the human body and how it interacts with the environment. I decided apply for the accelerated BSN program after meeting with the department chair and realizing that what I wanted to do the most was help people as nurses do. Because my biology courses were focused around health, the prerequisites for the program were covered.
Working on a biology degree gave me the opportunity to do independent research with Dr. Lin Wu. I was able to pick my own topic, and with the help of Dr. Wu, I designed and carried out the research. My research used techniques that I learned from previous biology courses, while introducing me to new methods and laboratory tests. Now, I experience a lot from the various clinical sites, allowing me to apply what I learned in class to real patients.
After graduation I would love to become a surgical nurse or OB nurse. Mount Union is preparing me by teaching me what I need to know about those fields of nursing and providing clinical experience so I can see what it's really like as a nurse in those fields.
