Geology Alumna Mentzer ’18 Earns NSF Graduate Research Fellowship

September 18, 2020

ROCHESTER, New York — University of Mount Union alumna Carlie Mentzer ’18, of London, Ohio, was recently awarded a National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship as she pursues a Ph.D. in geosciences from the University of Rochester in New York.

Menzter earned a Bachelor of Science degree in geology from Mount Union and earned her fellowship in the geosciences-paleoclimate field of study from the NSF.

Working with Dr. Carmala Garzione, Mentzer’s project aims to determine whether growth of the Northeastern Tibetan Plateau during the late Miocene (~12-5 million years ago) impacted regional and global climate. This work will be valuable in providing insight into the forces driving recent geologic climate change.
