Curriculum
Race, ethnicity, gender, age, education, and social class – you’ll explore these and other social factors through our major in sociology. You will also learn how they effect organizations and how they operate. You will have a wide variety of courses to explore, from diversity to deviance to family. Such courses include “Minority Group Relations” and “Family Violence.”

Learning Objectives
After successful completion of the sociology degree program at the University of Mount Union, students will demonstrate:
- Understanding of the scientific method and its application through qualitative and quantitative research designs used in sociology.
- Understanding of both general sociological theory as well as middle range theory unique to the substantive areas within sociology.
- Competence in communicating mastery of sociological knowledge in both written and oral form.
- Competence in applying sociological knowledge to real-life situations.

Experiential Learning
Students can intern at hospitals, police and probation departments; county prosecutor’s and public defender’s offices; agencies that treat alcoholism, drug abuse and mental illness; business corporations; non-profit organizations; retirement centers and nursing homes; and state and private agencies that work with juvenile delinquency, spousal abuse and children.
Organizations and Hands-On Opportunities
Students have the opportunity to get involved in the more than 80 organizations at Mount Union including the Sociology Club and Pi Gamma Mu, a national social science honorary. Students will also be able to gain hands-on experience and put classroom knowledge to work through various opportunities, including:
- Opportunities for internships at hospitals or police stations
- Research with peers or faculty

The Department of Social Sciences frequently brings sociology graduates of Mount Union back to campus to discuss opportunities in the field with current students.
