Three Majors, One Path
I chose Neuroscience as a major because I loved taking psychology in high school and wanted to learn more about brain processes and how they affect our mental state and other body processes. I picked up the biology major because it has always been one of my favorite subjects in school, and I plan to study medicine after college. French has been a language I've wanted to learn for a long time, so I added that as well. I plan to get a master's degree in either public health or biomedical sciences and then attend medical school. Mount Union is helping prepare me for this by creating classes that give me the necessary knowledge to be successful in my field. Such classes include my biomedical ethics class; we got to study numerous case studies and were even given the chance to come together in teams to create our own cases. This helped further develop my ethical thinking, especially when it comes to the clinical setting, and I'm excited to both learn more about bioethical decision-making and apply my knowledge.

Overcoming Obstacles
Not many people know this, but I was an international student when I initially applied to Mount Union. I was born in the United Kingdom and moved here when I was 4 years old. We didn't have much growing up, and we didn't even gain permanent resident status until I was 18. Because of this, I was not able to do a lot of things growing up, and when it came to college, I couldn't apply for any federal aid to cover my tuition. This meant I had to defer my enrollment to Mount until Spring 2024, instead of entering Fall 2023 with the rest of my class. Though this set my academic career back a semester, I do not feel like I've missed out on anything. I've gained determination, and I can't wait to continue to use all the skills I've learned, from both this experience and the people I met along the way, to continue to grow as a person and later as a professional.
