Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry seeks to contribute to the achievement of the general objectives of the University by providing students with a program that will prepare them for fulfilling lives, meaningful work, and responsible citizenship.  The major in Chemistry is built upon the principles and recommendations of the American Chemical Society (ACS) while that for Biochemistry is built upon the principles and recommendations of American Society of Biochemists and Molecular Biologists (ASBMB).  Students are prepared for advanced study in graduate or professional school or for careers in chemistry and biochemistry in industry, or secondary education. Instruction in the department places emphasis on the use of modern scientific instruments, a wide range of electronic resources such as journals and computer programs, research work, and the ability of the student to do independent work. The Department is approved by the American Chemical Society and offers a Certified Degree.
