World Language Proficiency
At the University of Mount Union, the world language proficiency requirement is designed to help you develop a skill that is critical in today’s climate: intercultural competence. Learning a world language will help you understand other cultures, ideas, and perspectives - tools that are vital in the 21st century.
To graduate, students must complete a 102-level course, which can be satisfied in one of the following ways:
- By passing the Proficiency Test
- By satisfactorily completing a 102 or higher-level course in a modern foreign language previously studied
- By satisfactorily completing the 101-102 sequence of a modern world language not previously studied
Special Situations:
- Students who have never studied a modern world language before coming to Mount Union must complete the 101-102 sequence of a modern world language
- Students who have satisfactorily completed a three-semester-hour course at the 102 level or higher in any modern world language at an accredited college or university will be considered to have completed the world language proficiency requirement
- Four-year University of Mount Union international students from countries where English is not an official language can choose to satisfy the world language proficiency in one of the above-mentioned ways or as follows:
- By presenting a TOEFL score of 500 or higher (paper score), 173 or higher (computer score) or 61 or higher (internet score)
- By satisfactorily completing an ESL course at the 109 level or higher
WL Placement Designations (Fall 2025)
The language placement recommendations are as follows:
Level A | Start with 101 of the language studied in high school or begin a new language |
Level B | Start with 102 of the language studied in high school or begin a new language |
Level C | Student may elect to take a 200-level course if they have had 3 or more recent years of the language or they may follow the same reccomendation as Level B |
Level D | Must complete FRN/GRN/JPN 235 H to meet graduation requirement |
Level E | Graduation requirement met. May take courses as electives at the 200 level (or 300 level for students with AP or Seal of Biliteracy credit) or start a new language |
