Welcome to the University of Mount Union's MSN program, where nursing excellence meets specialization. Our graduate nursing program features two unique offerings for advanced nursing roles - our Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) degree and the Emergency Nurse Practitioner (ENP) certificate. Mount Union allows you to choose the pathway that best suits you. A degree-seeking student can complete an MSN FNP pathway, or choose to complete both their MSN FNP and ENP certificate together. Candidates with a previously earned FNP degree can pursue their ENP independently.

MSN FNP Program

Our MSN FNP degree program allows you to elevate your nursing career to new heights. This pathway opens doors to advanced nursing roles, offering autonomy and the ability to bridge primary care gaps. Our purposefully designed program caters to frontline nurses, providing the flexibility of online learning complemented by hands-on skill development during short intensives guided by our dedicated faculty. 

You can earn your MSN FNP degree in as little as 22 months while balancing your commitments with our convenient online, asynchronous format. Short onsite skills intensives allow valuable connections with peers and faculty, preparing you confidently for practicum rotations. ENP Certificate Program

Our ENP certificate program allows you to step into the forefront of emergency healthcare. Tailored for family nurse practitioners aspiring to specialize in diverse emergency settings, this program hones your skills to provide immediate and comprehensive care to emergency patients. As an ENP, you play a vital role in diagnosing and treating acute symptoms with precision while delivering holistic patient care.

Whether pursued independently with an already earned FNP degree or concurrently with our MSN FNP program, the ENP certification will prepare you to meet the growing need among emergency departments to treat urgent primary care needs, critical illnesses, injuries, or trauma across the lifespan. Online MSN Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) and FNP/ENP Admission Requirements


The MSN program prepares nurses for the family nurse practitioner (FNP) role, caring for patients across the lifespan. Graduates obtain educational eligibility for national board certification as a family nurse practitioner (FNP).

Applicants must complete an application via the Nursing Central Application Service (CAS). Applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis.

Admission Requirements to FNP or FNP/ENP

  1. Completed a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree from an accredited program. Official transcripts of all undergraduate academic work from each college or institution of higher learning attended.
    *Prerequisite course required: Elementary statistics (MTH 123) with a grade of “C” or better.  
  2. GPA: A cumulative undergraduate grade point average of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale). *Applicants who do not meet the minimum GPA requirement but whose application contains evidence suggesting strong academic ability may be considered for admission on a case-by-case basis.
  3. A curriculum vita (CV) or resume.
  4. A statement of intent outlining the following: 1) qualifications and 2) rationale for applying to the program.

Note:

  • Verification of a current, unencumbered RN license and expiration date in the state in which the student is licensed, practices, and will be completing practicum hours. 
  • Clinical experience: At least 1,000 clinical hours of practice as a Registered Nurse prior to registering for the first practicum course. 

Applicants with current certification and licensure as family nurse practitioners (FNPs) may apply for the Emergency Nurse Practitioner certificate only. 
  

Transfer Credits  

A maximum of nine (9) semester hours of graduate work completed at other accredited institutions may be applied toward a master’s degree at UMU, provided the student earned a grade of A or B in such courses. Transfer hours from an accredited institution will be considered for acceptance at the time of application/acceptance to the Graduate Program of study. The Nursing Director and/or Program Coordinator will review the course. The transfer course must demonstrate that it meets or exceeds 70% of the content for the learning outcomes identified in the graduate course (through course content, student activities, and assessments in the syllabus). All track-specific didactic and clinical/practicum courses must be taken at the University of Mount Union.   

The following courses may be applied for transfer credit (limit of nine semester hours)  

  • NUR 501- Advanced Pathophysiology 3CR 
  • NUR 502- Advanced Pharmacology 3CR * 
  • NUR 503- Advanced Health Assessment 3CR 
  • NUR 504- Healthcare Trends and Issues 3CR 
  • NUR 505- Research and Evidence-Based Practice 3CR  

 
*Advanced 
Pharmacology must be taken within five years preceding an APRN National Certification exam, based on individual State Boards of Nursing regulations.

 

Online ENP Certificate Admission Requirements

The Emergency Nurse Practitioner (ENP) certificate is designed for nurses who desire to work in an urgent care or emergency department setting or are currently working there. Completing the ENP certificate allows educational eligibility for the national certification exam as an ENP.

Applicants must complete an application via the Nursing Central Application Service (CAS). Applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis.

  1. Completed a FNP degree or certificate from an accredited program. Official transcripts of all graduate academic work from each college or institution of higher learning attended. 
  2. GPA: A cumulative undergraduate grade point average of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale). *Applicants who do not meet the minimum GPA requirement but whose application contains evidence suggesting strong academic ability may be considered for admission on a case-by-case basis. 
  3. Verification of a current, unencumbered RN and APRN license and expiration date in the state where the student is licensed, practices, and will be completing practicum hours.  
  4. FNP credentials showing active status should be verified by the certification board (this can be obtained from the AANPCB and ANCC websites).
  5. A curriculum vitae (CV) or resume.
