Adaptable Prosthetic Leg

In collaboration with the Department of Physical Therapy program, students in the mechanical engineering major are working to develop a lower prosthetic leg that could potentially provide an adaptable, affordable and reusable interim prosthetic for amputees. The prototype is designed to withstand a maximum weight of 350 pounds and weigh less than six pounds while consisting of three primary components, including a prosthetic ankle.

The project was entered and selected as one of six finalists to compete in the 2017 Undergraduate Design Project Competition in Rehabilitation and Assistive Devices as part of the Summer Biomechanics, Bioengineering and Biotransport Conference (SB3C), in Tucson, Arizona. Mechanical engineering majors Kenny Muhart ‘17, Joshua Marchese '17, and Edward Cudjoe '17 will have the opportunity to present their work during a special podium presentation at the conference as well as network with professionals in the bioengineering field. 

The 2016 prosthetic leg team was also selected as a finalist to compete and present at 2016 Summer Biomechanics, Bioengineering and Biotransport Conference (SB3C) in National Harbor, Maryland. The design team was made up of Jason Shar ‘16, Nathan Levengood ’16 and Andrew Milhoan ’16 and led by Dr. Gargac, assistant professor of mechanical engineering.
